Why less often sells more

Photography — One point of light in the forest

The best question in any design isn’t “what can we add?”, but “what can we take out?”. Anything without a job is in the way.

Open any business website and count along: a newsletter popup, a cookie bar, a chat window, three sliders and an animation flying past. All well meant, and together they make sure the visitor no longer sees the one thing they came for.

Noise is expensive

Every extra element demands attention, and attention is exactly what you need for the only thing that counts: someone calling, booking or ordering. The less that shouts for attention, the louder your message sounds. That’s not a style choice, that’s arithmetic.

Leaving out is the hardest work

Anyone can add something. Daring to cut is harder, because everything feels important. My test is simple: can I explain in one sentence what job this element has? No? Then it goes. Every button, every photo and every line of text has to earn its place.

How to apply it tomorrow

Pick the most important page on your site and remove one thing that’s only there “because it can be”. Look at your numbers after a week. Chances are nothing got worse — and your page suddenly feels calmer. Repeat until only what’s needed remains.
