A fast site is not a luxury

Photography — Out on the street

Three seconds. That’s usually all a visitor gives your website. If nothing has appeared by then, they’re gone — and rarely come back.

Yet there are tens of thousands of business sites online that need five, six, sometimes ten seconds to start up. Not because the owner wants it that way, but because nobody ever looked.

What slowness really costs you

Say a hundred people search for your service and click through to your site. With a loading time of three seconds, roughly half of them drop off before the page is even there. That’s fifty potential customers you never saw, week in, week out. A slow site isn’t a cosmetic flaw, it’s a leak in your revenue.

Where those seconds go

It’s almost always the same three things: photos uploaded straight from the camera, themes and plugins getting in each other’s way, and cheap hosting running on fumes. All three can be fixed without changing how your site looks.

Why I build without detours

My sites are made of hand-written code, with no heavy systems underneath. Not because it sounds cool, but because there’s simply nothing left that can be slow. What you get is a site that’s on screen instantly, on every phone, even with a weak signal on the go.

Test it yourself

Grab your phone, turn off wifi and open your own website over 4G. Count the seconds out loud. Anything over two means there’s work to do — and that work is usually smaller than you think.
